No two Shire kitchens start from the same brief, so we build to yours rather than to a catalogue. Compact galley and single-run kitchens suit the Cronulla and Woolooware apartment stock, where every millimetre of bench and every soft-close drawer has to earn its place. The Shire sits in a warm-temperate coastal pocket of southern Sydney, and the local conditions shape how we spec a kitchen. The Bureau of Meteorology's long-term Sydney record puts average rainfall at around 1,211mm across roughly 100 rain days a year, and Cronulla summer days reach around 26C, so kitchens here deal with real humidity as well as the salt-laden southerly that comes off Bate Bay. In every wet zone - under the sink, around the dishwasher and along the splashback - we use 16-18mm HMR (high moisture resistant) board, then heat-seal the edges and seal each tap and sink cut-out so moisture cannot creep into the core. Being straight with you, HMR is moisture-resistant, not waterproof; good sealing and good hardware are what make it last. For homes close to the beach at Cronulla and Woolooware, or on the canals at Sylvania Waters, we upgrade to corrosion-resistant hinges, runners and fixings so salt air does not pit the metalwork. Carcasses are glued and dowelled and built square, then scribed and packed level on site to reveals within about 2mm - important in the post-war fibro and interwar cottages that settle out of square over decades. Drawers run on full-extension soft-close runners rated to around 40kg, up to 70kg for heavy pot drawers, on Blum or Hettich hardware, and our hinges are three-way adjustable and tested well beyond 100,000 open-close cycles. Doors are finished in your choice of melamine, high-pressure laminate, timber veneer or a hard-wearing two-pac polyurethane top-coat. Benchtops come in laminate, natural granite or marble through licensed stonemasons, porcelain and sintered surfaces, solid timber or stainless steel. We do not fabricate or install engineered stone - its manufacture and supply were banned nationally on 1 July 2024 and importation from 1 January 2025 because of the silicosis risk to workers.

Every kitchen is priced after a measure, so treat these as indicative ranges to plan around, not fixed quotes. As a guide for the Shire, a compact galley or single-run kitchen in an apartment or smaller cottage - custom cabinetry, soft-close hardware and a laminate benchtop - typically lands around $18,000 to $25,000 supplied and installed. A mid-size L-shaped or U-shaped family kitchen through Miranda, Gymea or Caringbah, with a pantry, a run of pot drawers and a stone or porcelain top, more commonly sits in the $28,000 to $45,000 range. How we build a kitchen to last in a coastal Sydney climate

IKEA Tempe is genuinely close to the Shire - roughly 19km and about 18 minutes up the Princes Highway from Sutherland - and Bunnings at Caringbah stocks the Kaboodle flat-pack range, so this is a fair question and we will give you a straight answer. Flat-pack works when a room is square, standard and simple, and when you are happy to design within fixed module sizes that step up in set increments and to assemble and install it yourself or pay a third party. Where it struggles is fit. So much of the Shire's housing is post-war fibro and interwar brick that has settled out of square, or waterfront and apartment rooms with odd angles, low sills and services in awkward spots, and a flat-pack module simply cannot be scribed to a wall that is 15mm out over its length - you end up with visible gaps filled by trims. Custom cabinetry is cut to your actual dimensions, scribed tight to your walls, and finished in materials and colours well beyond a boxed catalogue. Your cabinetry is made to the exact measurements of your room, with carcasses glued, dowelled and built square, heat-sealed edge-banding on every exposed edge, and quality soft-close Blum or Hettich hardware. For beach and waterfront homes we specify corrosion-resistant hinges, runners and fixings against the salt air, and 16 to 18mm HMR board in every wet area.

Do you build custom kitchens for apartments and units in Cronulla?

Yes. A large share of our Cronulla and Woolooware work is apartment and unit kitchens, where space is tight and clever storage matters most. We measure the actual room, work around fixed services and strata constraints, and build compact galley or single-run layouts with full-extension soft-close drawers so nothing is wasted. Near the beach we also upgrade to corrosion-resistant hardware to cope with the salt air off Bate Bay.

Can you replace just the benchtop and doors without a full rebuild?

Often, yes. If your existing carcasses are sound and square, we can reface with new doors, panels and a new benchtop for a fresh look at a lower cost than a full replacement. If the boxes are water-damaged, swollen or badly out of layout, a full rebuild is usually the better spend. We will tell you honestly which one your kitchen warrants after the measure - we do not push a full rebuild you do not need.

What benchtops can you supply now that engineered stone is banned?

We fit laminate, natural granite and marble through licensed stonemasons, porcelain and sintered surfaces, solid timber and stainless steel. We do not fabricate or install engineered (reconstituted) stone - its manufacture, supply and installation were banned nationally from 1 July 2024, with importation banned from 1 January 2025, because of the silicosis risk to workers. Porcelain and natural stone give you a very similar premium look and are fully compliant.

How long does a custom kitchen take from measure to finished install?

As a rough guide, allow around 5 to 7 weeks from approved design and final measure to installation, depending on our workshop schedule and your benchtop material - natural stone and porcelain need template and fabrication time after the cabinets are set. The on-site install itself is usually a few days, plus a return visit for the stone and final adjustments. We give you a dated schedule up front and coordinate the plumber, electrician and tiler around it.

Do you handle the plumbing, electrical and tiling too?

We manage the full job. While we build and install the cabinetry ourselves, we coordinate the licensed plumber, electrician, stonemason and tiler your kitchen needs so the whole renovation runs to one schedule. You deal with us, not five separate trades. Everyone on site works under our $20M public liability cover and to a NSW Contractors Licence standard, so the job is properly insured from start to finish.
