A bathroom is the wettest room in the house, and the Shire adds two extra loads. Boxes are glued and dowelled and built dead square, then scribed to the wall on install so there is no gap at the splashback for water to track behind. Drawers run on full-extension runners rated to about 40kg, with Blum or Hettich soft-close so a wet, heavy top drawer still closes gently; hinges are three-way adjustable and tested past 100,000 open-close cycles. In beachside and waterfront homes we upgrade to corrosion-resistant hinges, runners and fixings so the hardware does not pit in the salt air. We install to reveals within about 2mm, keep clearances around plumbing and any wall-mounted heater or fuse box, and seal the join to the floor. Much of the Shire is post-war fibro and brick-veneer stock from the 1950s to 1970s, so walls are rarely plumb, and scribing, not packing, is what makes a custom vanity sit flush.

Custom vanity or flat-pack from IKEA Tempe?

IKEA Tempe is genuinely close to the Shire, roughly 29km and about a 30-minute drive up the Princes Highway, and Bunnings at Caringbah and Kirrawee stocks Kaboodle, so flat-pack is a real option and we will say so honestly. For a dead-square modern bathroom on standard dimensions, a flat-pack vanity can work. The catch is fit. Flat-pack and Kaboodle come in fixed module widths of 600mm, 900mm and 1,200mm, and Shire bathrooms rarely oblige, especially in the post-war fibro and brick homes where walls run out of square and the plumbing sits where the plumber put it in 1965, not where a module expects it. Vanity tops and basins: stone, porcelain, laminate and timber

A vanity top sits in the wettest part of the house and takes daily water, heat from a hair dryer and whatever gets spilled on it, so the material decides how it ages.

Compliant vanity top materials

Natural stone, porcelain or sintered stone, timber and laminate are the options. Engineered stone is not: manufacture, supply and installation were banned nationally from 1 July 2024 and importation from 1 January 2025. Porcelain handles heat and water well, natural stone suits a premium bathroom, and laminate remains sensible in a second bathroom or a rental.

Basins and how they meet the top

An above-counter basin frees the drawer space beneath but breaks the usable bench. An under-mount basin keeps the top continuous and easier to wipe down, and an integrated basin removes the joint altogether. Whatever sits on top, the carcass beneath is HMR moisture-resistant board with heat-sealed edges, which is the part that decides whether the cabinet is still square in ten years.

Is a moisture-resistant vanity actually waterproof?

No, and we will never tell you otherwise. Our wet-area carcasses are 16-18mm HMR (high moisture-resistant) board, which resists the humidity and the odd splash far better than standard particleboard, but no cabinet board is waterproof. Bring a tile sample or a photo to the measure and we will spec finishes against it.

Do you supply the basin, tapware and benchtop, or just the cabinet?

We can do either. Most clients have us supply and template the benchtop, in laminate, natural stone via our licensed stonemasons, porcelain or sintered stone, solid timber or stainless, and cut it for your chosen basin. We build the cabinet to suit whichever basin and tapware you select, whether you buy them or we include an allowance. We never supply engineered stone, which has been banned nationally since 1 July 2024. Tell us your basin model at the measure so we set the cut-out and drawer notches correctly.

Which benchtops can I have now that engineered stone is banned?

Plenty. The national ban on engineered (reconstituted) stone covers manufacture, supply and installation from 1 July 2024, with importation stopped from 1 January 2025, so we do not touch it. For a vanity top you can choose laminate, natural granite or marble cut by our licensed stonemasons, porcelain or sintered stone, solid timber, or stainless. Each has a different look, price and care routine, and we will talk you through which suits your bathroom, your budget and how the top will be used.

How long does a custom vanity take from measure to install?

As a general guide, allow around two to four weeks from a confirmed measure and finish selection to installation, depending on our current workload and the benchtop, since natural stone and porcelain need templating after the cabinet is in, which adds a step. We give you a realistic date at quoting and coordinate with your tiler and plumber so the vanity goes in after waterproofing and tiling, with the plumbing rough-in already where the drawers are notched.

Do you build vanities for beachside and waterfront homes?

Yes, and we spec them differently. Homes near Cronulla, Bate Bay, Woolooware and the Sylvania Waters and Port Hacking waterfront cop salt-laden air, so we upgrade to corrosion-resistant hinges, runners and fixings that will not pit, seal every edge, and choose finishes that cope with coastal humidity. The carcass is still 16-18mm HMR. It is a modest cost over a standard build and it is the difference between hardware that lasts and hardware that seizes within a few salty summers.
